The VICAV dictionaries are a collection of several digital resources that provide lexical information on the vocabulary of selected Arabic linguistic varieties. In addition to the spoken varieties of the metropolises of Tunis, Cairo, Damascus and Baghdad, the collection includes the SHAWI dictionary (varieties of Arabic-speaking Bedouins in south-eastern Turkey, Syria and Iraq) and a small dictionary with data on Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).

The dictionaries were compiled under two perspectives; on the one hand they serve comparative linguistic purposes, on the other hand they were created to support the extensive spoken Arabic teaching activities of the University of Vienna.

With the exception of the SHAWI dictionary, which is still under construction, the VICAV dictionaries, some of which were created in very different scenarios, can all be consulted via the VICAV platform and follow a standardised TEI-P5-based markup scheme. With the restructuring of the platform, they are all to be transferred to Lex-0.
