Small Farsi-English Internet Dictionary

The Small Farsi-English Internet Dictionary is a bilingual dictionary that has been in development for many years as part of a language teaching programme at the Department of Near-Estern Studies at the University of Vienna. The dictionary has a very experimental character, as it is one of the first dictionaries at ACDH-CH to be modelled in TEI Lex-0. Even though it does not fall thematically within the scope of VICAV, it was used for a long time as a test environment for the development first of the Viennese Lexicographic Editor (VLE) and more recently of the new lexicographic editor, the ˂TEI˃Enricher.

The focus in the creation of the dictionary is on contemporary language. Initially, the dictionary primarily included lexical elements that are required in university language teaching. Later, primarily data that could not be found in other dictionaries was integrated. Particular attention was paid to neologisms such as ‘virtual reality’, ‘hard drive’ and ‘charger’ (of a mobile phone), which cannot be found in most of the older printed dictionaries. For the time being, no attempt will be made to achieve complete coverage. When compiling the dictionary, numerous resources available on the Internet are taken into account. The very extensive Persian-language Wikipedia plays a particularly important role here.

As of 22 July 2024, the published dictionary contained 15,972 lemmas (single and multi-word units).
