One of the long-term project activities bundled in the project cluster of the WBÖ (Dictionary of Historical Bavarian Dialects in Austria and South Tyrol) is the “Lexicography” task area, which is dedicated to the lexicographical processing of the WBÖ paper slip documents. The aim of this historical document collection was to document the lexical, semantic and phonetic variation of the basic and regional dialects in the territory of present-day Austria and South Tyrol in the late 19th and early 20th century in the form of dictionary articles.

Since 2016, the focus of the lexicographical work has been on the text-technologically supported writing of dictionary articles from the letter section F/V onwards. The basis for this is the WBÖ's historical collection of documents, which comprises around three million paper slips and is now largely available as a WBÖ Database in XML/TEI format (see WBÖ - Corpus & Infrastructure). As part of the lexicographical sub-project, the data will be successively enriched, primarily through lemmatization, semantic classifications and geographical information. The publication platform for the dictionary articles is the Lexical Information System Austria (LIÖ).

In close cooperation with the WBÖ task area “Corpus & Infrastructure”, the lexicographical task area is dedicated to the retro-digitization of articles on the letter sections A - E published in print between 1963 and 2015. The aim of the cooperation project, which is being carried out together with the ÖAW publishing house, is to record the dictionary articles from the print volumes as full texts and to publish them digitally together with the successively new dictionary articles in LIÖ. The resulting XML database will be linked to the existing WBÖ document database (see WBÖ - Corpus & Infrastructure).

Also in close cooperation with the “WBÖ - Corpus & Infrastructure” department, lexicographic tools are tested, validated and (further) developed (e.g., WBÖ – Lexicographic Editor, CollectionCat). These tools not only support the creation of dictionary articles, but are also used to enrich the WBÖ document database (see WBÖ - Corpus  &Infrastructure). The lexicographical field of activity of the WBÖ project cluster is closely integrated into international lexicographical networks such as LexikoNet or EURALEX and is involved in the organization and hosting of scientific conferences within this framework.

The core team includes the following members of the Research Unit Linguistics: Andreas Gellan (deputy editorial director), Agnes Kim, Katharina Korecky-Kröll, Philipp Stöckle (editor) and Sabine Wahl.
