Summary:Those who study organizational behavior have increasingly accepted the notion that workplaces function as cultures. Harrison M. Trice goes one step further, suggesting that occupations create powerful subcultures. Largely overlooked, they play an essential role in the dynamics of a workplace. Drawing examples from professionals as diverse as cowboys, accountants, jazz musicians, stevedores, bartenders, and nurses, he argues for a shift in emphasis from the overall organizational culture to the interrelationships of subcultures.
