Born in Lübeck in 1943, growing up in Carinthia. 1958–1963: teacher training college in Klagenfurt, then teaching at the one-class primary school of a mountain village. German and English Studies at the University of Vienna (Dr. phil.). 1969–09/1972: member of the Institut für Österreichische Dialekt- und Namenlexika (DINAMLEX) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, 10/1972–12/2008: linguist at the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Since 2009: consultant at the Phonogrammarchiv.
