HOT FROM THE PRESS (MORE OR LESS) – VOLUME 10 OF THE INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON AUDIO-VISUAL RESEARCH (THE PHONOGRAMMARCHIV’S YEARBOOK)!

On 25 and 26 April 2019, the symposium “Nicht ungehört verhallen – 120 Jahre Phonogrammarchiv (Lest it should go unheard – 120 years of the Phonogrammarchiv)” took place at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Volume 10 of our yearbook now offers written versions of a large part of the manifold – and this time exclusively German-language – contributions (with abstracts in German and English). After an introduction by the new head of the archive (Kerstin Klenke), Sebastian Klotz’s keynote lecture on the history of phonographic archives, and the artistic intervention (audio play by Katharina Tiwald), Katrin Abromeit, Oliver Danner and Johannes Spitzbart focus on technical topics (restoration, optical soundtrack scanning, digital long-term preservation). Barbara Alge and Gebhard Fartacek deal with research data management and methodological challenges in field research, followed by articles on the Quellmalz Collection (Thomas Nußbaumer) and the corpus “Österreichische Dialektaufnahmen im 20. Jahrhundert”, i.e. Austrian dialect recordings from the 20^th century (Alexandra N. Lenz et al.). Finally, “Africa’s Collective Memory” and outreach strategies in a postcolonial context are the central topics of the contributions by Prince Kum’a Ndumbe III and August Schmidhofer. At the end, as always, there is the Phonogrammarchiv’s annual report (for 2018).
