Since 2000, the Numismatic Commission (now research group Numismatics, division Documenta Antiqua) has identified the coins found in the excavations conducted by the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Ephesos (Turkey).
Currently, the focus lies on the analysis of new finds from the ongoing excavations, and preparation of numismatic catalogues for the archaeological reports. In the future, it is planned to start a large-scale research on the monetary history of Ephesos, focusing especially on the still little-studied Late Roman and Byzantine periods.
