Thematic Platform Migration and Diversity

The thematic platform aims to strengthen interdisciplinary exchange in migration and diversity research within and outside the ÖAW (Austrian Academy of Sciences) and to promote the transfer of scientific knowledge to society.

Various aspects of migration research are addressed in sociology, geography, political science, demography, economics, law, history, cultural and social anthropology, as well as in linguistics and literature studies. To facilitate interdisciplinary exchange between these different disciplines, the platform will organize a conference every two years, which will focus on an overarching subject but will also be open to contributions beyond this spectrum. We are organizing the next conference (September 2024) together with the University of Innsbruck under the motto "Global Inequalities, (Im)Mobilities, and Migration Societies: Post-Migrant Perspectives."

Since the turn of the century, migration has dramatically gained media attention across Europe and has repeatedly become the focus of political debates. At the same time, migration research, which has developed at the intersection of various social and humanities disciplines since the 1970s but was long considered marginal, has increasingly gained recognition in the mainstream of academic sciences. However, the public visibility of this research in Austria is still relatively low, partly because most book publications are limited to an academic audience and appear in small print runs with high sale prices. To make the scientific findings of migration and diversity research accessible to a broader public and thus lay the foundation for a more factual migration debate, the platform will continue the book series "Migration & ..." This series presents scientific findings in a comprehensible way for a wide audience.

The thematic platform maintains a mailing list that serves as a platform for scientific exchange. All interested parties can use this list to exchange calls for papers, events and information on migration and integration research focusing on Austria.
