Ferdinand von Hochstetter

NEW ZEALAND DIARIES

Our goal is to publish the hitherto unpublished New Zealand diaries of the geologist Ferdinand Hochstetter (1829–1884) in his capacity as a member of the scientific commission of the Austrian round-the-world expedition of the frigate Novara (1857–1859). In his diaries, Hochstetter reports on his scientific work during his time in New Zealand from December 1858 to October 1859. Hochstetter, who would become the first director of the Natural History Museum in Vienna, is still considered a central figure in the history of science in New Zealand and an important science communicator.
