Festivals and Celebrations within the Casa de Austria

Particular emphasis is placed on the cultural exchange between Spain and Austria in the 16th to 18thcenturies. During this period the mutual cultural influences between the Spanish and Austrian lines of the Casa de Austria are much less visible before the dynastic change from the Habsburgs to the Bourbons in 1700 than after. The courtly celebrations during the reigns of the Spanish kings Philipp IV and Charles II, the beginnings of Italian opera in Barcelona under Archduke Charles, later Emperor Charles VI, and the development of court opera in Madrid in the first half of the 18th century often have a common point of reference, the Viennese imperial court.
