Web materials on Japanese religion

"Religion-in-Japan" provides basic information about the two main religions of Japan, Buddhism and Shinto, covering their history as well as their modern forms. It is meant as an introduction for students of Japanese or Religious Studies, but is also useful for general readers with an interest in Japanese culture. The handbook consists of seven thematic groups (or "chapters") that contain altogether 75 "main pages". It is planned for these main pages to remain more or less the same, augmented by a growing number of "side pages" that range from illustrations or short citations of original sources to detailed discussions on special topics. Thus, the "main pages" provide a general structure for the continually increasing number of "side pages". A glossary of Japanese terms, kanji, periodical tables, geographical maps, and a detailed "side map" assist in the use of the handbook, and lists of web links and bibliographic references lead to additional sources of information.

Online since 2006, "Religion-in-Japan" has become one of the most popular online ressources on religion in the German-speaking world.

In 2012 the wiki project "Kamigraphie" was established based on wikiweb database project experiments conducted since 2007 within the framework of courses at the University of Vienna. While the spectrum of subjects is similar to that of "Religion-in-Japan", the wiki project "Kamigraphie" contains more specific information and can be used as a basis for further research. Moreover, Japanese sources play a larger part. In general, the texts are being written by students, whereupon they are edited and organized by the project head.
