The>> satyr in Greek art : the origins and changes concerning appearance and significance 2010 570, 148 S. zahlr. The intention of the thesis is to generate a complete overview of satyr depictions from the 7th to the 1st century b. c. The treatment of all monumental categories from different territories should outline changes in shape and iconology concerning the satyr. The first chapter of the thesis composes the most important sources of ancient literature Satyrs appearing. The questions concerning nomenclature (Satyr / Silen) as well as the original autonomy and accordingly the membership of the Dionysian Thiasos are tried to answer. The second chapter deals with the genesis of the iconography of the satyr and the possible forerunners as well as other "Mischwesen" from adjacent cultures of the Orient and Egypt. Especially the Egyptian god Bes had a great influence on the picture of the satyr. During the first quarter of the 6th century b. c.<br />the canonical satyr - iconography strengthens. From the beginning the satyr has to do with dance, music and the consume of wine and therefore with Dionysos. The third chapter deals with the development of satyrs in archaic Greek art, whereas an excursus provides an overview of Satyr depictions in Etruria. Satyrs on vases, which were used mainly during wassail, seem to serve as figures of identification and mirror of the Greek man while the symposion. In other image carriers like sarcophags, Antefixes or tarracotta figurines used as burial objects, they have an apotropaic function, because the satyr mask protected from the evil. In the forth chapter satyr depictions of the classical period are described. Within vase painting the emphasis is on vases concerning satyr plays as on the development of tragedy and satyr play and on images depicting satyrs as Greek citicens. The significance of life-size sculpture, which is partly nearly completely humanized and which acted as political organs is accentuated. The fifth chapter deals with satyr depictions in hellenistic art, whereas because of the stock of monuments and the iconological evidence, nearly only sculpture is examined. An abstract of the Dionysian regime propaganda from the hellenistic kings and the following legitimation of life-sized sculpure also in public areas explains the increase of monuments with satyr depictions in hellenistic times. At the end of each chapter is placed a summary of argumentation. The sixth chapter presents the conclusions of the thesis, which point out the morphological and iconological development of the satyr during six centuries. As an attachment one can find the catalogue, which describes the important monuments that are mentioned in the thesis. The catalogue contains information about provenance, actual location of the monument, size, dating and literature. The catalogue is classified in Egyptian and oriental monuments (Catalogue A), forerunners and earliest satyrs (Catalogue B), Vase painting (Catalogue C), Sculpture (Catalogue D), Coins and gems (Catalogue E) and Varia (Catalogue F). At the end of the thesis one finds the plates, which contain 148 figure plates and represent approximately two thirds of the monuments described in the catalogue.
