Summary:The depot is the hidden side in contrast to the public space of the museum. It usually remains hidden from the public's perception. In a number of museums, a return to their own depots has been observed for some time, which manifests itself in study collections, archive exhibitions or display depots. This book asks what makes the depot so attractive as a metaphor, method or place for the museum today. It is interested in the transitions between depot and exhibition, in valorization and staging strategies and in breaking with conventions of representation: How does exhibiting change things? Which logics do depot and show follow? What is exposable and what is worth exposing? With a view to the social relevance, it asks: What do those responsible expect from the opening of their depots? Can these approaches be answers to the demands for a democratic museum and to the self-image of the museum institution, which has fallen into crisis? From this perspective, the depot is an expression of social values and cultural ideals.
