Undine Gruenter lived to be only 50 years old; she spent most of her life in her adopted home Paris. She was both a 'femme de lettres' and a 'poeta doctus', strongly influenced by French culture and literature and dealt with poetological positions. From the beginning she developed a strong aesthetic point of view. During her lifetime she published only seven works; others, including her masterpieces, were only published posthumously. Her poetic prose found recognition above all with literary critics, and she became known to the public and even German scholars to only a very limited extent. This volume aims to remedy this situation. It shows how Gruenter's work is based on surrealist positions in French literature and how she creates something completely unique in German literature by transforming places into artistic spaces. Undine Gruenter's literary work is not so well known as it should be because according to the author's opinion she was one of the most excellent female writers in German contemporary literature. She was writing for 25 years, especially after she moved from Germany to Paris where she lived half of her life. Paris in a cultural and literary sense had great importance for her life and for her work. She was under the influence of French Surrealism, but she created a fully original and independent body of work which puts emphasis on the "poetry of the language.".
