The Habsburg rulers had a long-lasting love affair with music, both as patrons and performers. According to this tradition Empress Maria Theresia, who performed as a singer herself, had her children follow in her footsteps by receiving education in basic musical theory, musical instruments and singing. Like their mother they performed numerous compositions written specifically for them. This thesis takes an in-depth look at their musical education - in particular as singers - and gives a detailed description of the musical events they took part in. It puts the Imperial family's musical life in the historical context of the changes of musical life in general: the decline of the Imperial Court Chapel due to financial cuts, the out-sourcing of opera productions, which had been the exclusive right of the court until then, and the introduction of French lifestyle through Maria Theresia's husband, Emperor Franz Stephan of Lorraine.
