| ||
520 | |a eng: Biological signaling involves a complex network of decision making and transferring molecules that must be regulated by proteases, key players in health and disease. The cysteine protease legumain exemplifies how intricate multifactorial processes combine in zymogen activation and activity regulation. These principles are key to accomplish its demonstrated roles in (auto-)immunity and cancer.
However, the exact mechanism of the activation process and the resulting consequences on legumain activity and localization remained unclear. The aim of the here presented work was to study biochemical and structural properties of human (pro)legumain to get an in-depth understanding of its enigmatic autocatalytic activation and activity regulation principles. | ||
