520 |a eng: The dissertation (571 pages) consists mainly of three parts - a study, a critical edition of the Sanskrit-text and a translation of this part of Prabhakaras Brhati, the subcommentary to the commentary Sabarasvamins to the Mimamsa-Sutras, which deals with the Veda as a distinct means of knowledge. The first part of the study describes some observations of special points concerning the method, which Prabhakara used in presenting his teachings of the Veda as a means of knowledge in a more general way and some observations concerning the nature and the understanding of the 'Mimamsa' itself corresponding to Prabhakaras point of view. This part is followed by a detailed examination Prabhakaras understanding of the Veda as a means of knowledge and the attempt to show that Kumarilas teachings concerning the same means of knowledge are most probably to be interpreted as a reaction against Prabhakara ideas, whereas Prabhakaras opponents belong to the school of Nyaya. The second part presents a critical edition of the text of the commentary Prabhakaras to the Mimamsa-Sutra I.1.2-4 and the 'sastraprakarana' being a part of his commentary to Mimamsa-Sutra 1.1.5. Besides that, it includes the commentary of the Rjuvimala of Salikanatha to these passages of the Brhati as well as quotations and doxographic passages from other authors in footnotes. The last part includes a translation and explications with additional indices.
