Völkl, Bernhard aut Usage of social information in the foraging behaviour of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) eingereicht von Bernhard Völkl Parallelt. [Übers. des Autors]: Usage of social information in the foraging behaviour of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) 2005 119 Bl. Ill., graph. Darst. Zsfassung in dt.
eng: Over the last two decades, the Machiavellian Intelligence Hypothesis has become a widely accepted theory for the evolution of cognition in primates and humans. Acknowledging that the social environment of primates (and other animals living in individualized societies) is much more complex than the physical environment, it postulates that dealing with problems in the social domain led to a mental arms race which is assumed to be the driving force in the evolution of specific cognitive mechanisms. One of the most frequently observed problems of sociality is intra-group competition for resources especially food. Thus, foraging behaviour can be assumed as a gainful context in which to study the employment of socio-cognitive abilities.
While foraging in groups commonly increases competition over limited resources, it also enables individuals to incorporate additional information about location, quality, and quantity of food sources by paying attention to the behaviour of the other group members.
Acquisition of public information by observation of conspecifics, which is generally referred to as social learning is the central topic of this thesis. Three research papers discuss three different aspects of social influence on the foraging behaviour of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). As I acknowledge the importance of bioethical principles, which have to be considered when research includes practical work with captive animals, I have also included two papers concerning aspects of animal welfare for captive marmosets.
