During the last century there have been extended clear fellings in the area of Rax and Schneeberg. Due to missing tending the following stands are unstable. As the result of intensiv hunting activities with high game stocks there have been unacceptable damages especially in young stands. The main tasks for stabilizing the protection forests are: 1) Silvicultural acceptable game densities. 2) Favouring shelterwood system and strip-femel system instead of clear fellings. 3) Intensiv tending of young stands. 3) Modernized forest management. 4) Financing the systematic, continuous tending of the protection forests.
