Amateur videos on the internet - mostly shortened to the keyword »YouTube« - are currently being hotly discussed by the general public and by media studies: what 'shackles' the user, what pulls them into the quicksand of the net? This book opens up a new perspective for the reader on the circulation of video images: unexpected, divergent media practices are analyzed, which oscillate between destruction, intervention, automatism, repetition and imitation, and feed into the production of recycling videos. As is shown here, the initially individual reproduction and dissemination, participation and modification make a »mass medium« out of a medium. Amateurvideos im Internet - meist verkürzt auf das Stichwort »YouTube« - werden gegenwärtig in der Öffentlichkeit ebenso wie in den Medienwissenschaften intensiv diskutiert: Was 'fesselt' die Nutzer, was zieht sie in den Sog des Netzes hinein? Das Buch eröffnet dem Leser einen neuen Blick auf die Zirkulation der Videobilder: Analysiert werden unerwartete, deviante Medienpraxen, die zwischen Zerstörung, Intervention, Automatismus, Wiederholung und Nachahmung oszillieren und in die Produktion von Recyclingvideos münden. Wie sich zeigt, machen erst individuelle Wieder- und Weitergabe, Teilhabe und Modifikation aus einem Medium ein »Massenmedium«.
