Mit Großinvestitionen im Kulturbereich wird intensiv an der Veränderung des Stadtraumes und des städtischen Image gearbeitet. Gleichzeitig verändert sich die Identität der Einwohner; auch in Katowice erlebt das oberschlesische Regionalbewusstsein gegenwärtig eine Renaissance. Diese vielschichtigen, höchst dynamischen Wandlungsprozesse porträtiert die Untersuchung und nimmt sie als Ausgangspunkt für die Frage, wie in diesem genuin auf die Zukunft ausgerichteten Transformationsprozess mit Vergangenheit und Geschichte umgegangen wird. Welche öffentlichen historischen Narrationen entstehen aus dieser provozierenden Umbruchsituation heraus? Wie wird historisch Sinn gebildet und welche Wirkungen bzw. Funktionen hat öffentliche Geschichte in Zeiten strukturellen Wandels? Mit diesem Forschungsdesign betritt die Studie Neuland: Die theoretischen Überlegungen Jörn Rüsens zu Geschichtskultur und Geschichtsbewusstsein wurden so operationalisiert, dass sie erstmals für die Untersuchung eines Stadtraumes angewandt werden konnten.
