Around 1800 the modern tragedy manifested itself in constant dispute with a philosophical tragedy discourse, making the traditional genre criteria which were still mainly oriented on Aristotle's drama aesthetics fade into the background and bringing to the fore definition attempts which were grounded in cultural theory. The tension between the philosophical discourse and concrete theatre practice led in the 19th and 20th centuries to initiatives of drama-aesthetic innovation which lastingly changed the physiognomy of modern tragedy.
Die moderne Tragödie formiert sich um 1800 in beständiger Auseinandersetzung mit einem philosophischen Tragödiendiskurs, der überkommene, noch vornehmlich an der aristotelischen Dramenästhetik orientierte Gattungskriterien in den Hintergrund treten lässt und kulturtheoretisch fundierte Definitionsversuche in den Mittelpunkt rückt. Die Spannung zwischen philosophischem Diskurs und konkreter Theaterpraxis führt im Verlauf des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts zu dramenästhetischen Innovationsschüben, welche die Physiognomie der modernen Tragödie nachhaltig verändern.

The tension between the philosophical discourse and concrete theatre practice led in the 19th and 20th centuries to initiatives of drama-aesthetic innovation which lastingly changed the physiognomy of modern tragedy.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Die moderne Tragödie formiert sich um 1800 in beständiger Auseinandersetzung mit einem philosophischen Tragödiendiskurs, der überkommene, noch vornehmlich an der aristotelischen Dramenästhetik orientierte Gattungskriterien in den Hintergrund treten lässt und kulturtheoretisch fundierte Definitionsversuche in den Mittelpunkt rückt. Die Spannung zwischen philosophischem Diskurs und konkreter Theaterpraxis führt im Verlauf des 19. und 20.
