Lieutenant Gustl is a highly innovative novella which describes the inner monologue of a lieutenant of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, revolving around the code of honor of the army. The book is an implicit criticism of the values of the imperial Austrian military and its view of society. Vom Werk Arthur Schnitzlers existiert bislang keine kritische Ausgabe. Der vorliegende Band bietet das Faksimile des Manuskripts, eine präzise Transkription und einen Lesetext. Der Text wird erschlossen durch editorische Apparate, einen literaturwissenschaftlichen Kommentar sowie einen ausführlichen Editionsbericht. Die Ausgabe erlaubt damit erstmals Einblicke in die Werkgenese. Lieutenant Gustl ist eine höchst innovative Novelle: Dieser ‚Innere Monolog‘ eines Leutnants der k. u. k. Armee kreist um den Ehrenkodex der Offiziere und kritisiert implizit militärische Haltungen und gesellschaftliche Werte der ausgehenden Habsburger-Monarchie. |
