The essays collected in this volume consider this and related questions (for example, the relationship between photography and representation, history, time, narrative, memory, mourning, and so on) through the works of Walter Benjamin, Hélène Cixous, and Jacques Derrida, among others. The volume opens with a previously untranslated essay by Derrida on photography, entitled, precisely, Aletheia (Truth), and it concludes with ‘Melville’s Couvade’, an original work of fiction on the theme of photography by David Farrell Krell.
