Paleoenvironmental studies at Krems-Wachtberg East

New publication in Quaternary International 464, 2018

For more than a century the Wachtberg in Krems has been well known for its Quaternary geological outcrops and Upper Palaeolithic sites. Since the 1990s research was increasingly intensified. New fieldwork provided important insights into the Wachtberg’s use during the Gravettian. In 2012–2013 the site Krems-Wachtberg East was excavated by the Quaternary Archaeology research group of the Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA). In the current issue of Quaternary International results of sedimentological investigations at the excavation’s main profile are published. For this study, a multi-methodological approach to describe the interplay between soil formation, loess accumulation, and surface processes was applied. The comparison with the neighbouring site Krems-Wachtberg, which was excavated from 2005–2015, reveals that OSL- and radiocarbon-ages and the (archaeological) stratigraphy of both profiles are comparable, however pedogenetic features are more evident at Krems-Wachtberg East.
