The City of Vienna's prizes for culture and science have been awarded annually since 1947. In order to give appropriate recognition to young artists and scientists, 13 additional prizes have been awarded each year since 1951. The award is a recognition of the previous artistic and scientific achievements of the prize winners and is intended to encourage them in their future careers.
Vienna-based artists and scientists were invited to apply for the prizes in the fields of architecture, visual arts, literature, music and science, each of which is endowed with € 4,000. The award winners, who have distinguished themselves through special achievements in their respective fields, are selected by independent advisory boards.
