The modern human physique is characterised by its tall, slender shape compared to other hominins such as Australopithecus or Neanderthals. Key features of this modern body plan may have emerged during evolution with Homo erectus, particularly in relation to locomotion and foraging in the savannah. In my lecture, I will examine these factors in more detail. By using new methods for measuring and reconstructing fossil remains as well as sports science experiments and kinematic computer simulations, it is possible to draw a more precise picture of these processes. This picture suggests that the development of the modern building plan comprises several phases.
