»À la recherche du temps perdu. Insights into Five Years of Research and Select Research Results of the ERC Starting Grants „Challenging Time(s)“«

During the past five years, the team of the ERC Starting Grant »Challenging Time(s): A New Approach to Written Sources for Ancient Egyptian Chronology« has worked on a critical assessment of written sources which constitute the very foundations of ancient Egypt’s historical chronology. From contemporaneous sources of the Early Dynastic Period to king-lists of the Graeco-Roman Period, written records from three millennia have been re-examined and newly assessed or, in part, made accessible for the first time with the aid of innovative and up-to-date methodologies from Egyptological philology and linguistics in a wider cultural and historical context.

On 31 August 2023, the ERC Starting Grant »Challenging Time(s)« concluded, which is a befitting occasion to look back onto five years and to present select research results. In addition to specimen from the work on specific written sources and newly developed methodologies, first glimpses of the expected impact on current models of ancient Egyptian historical chronology will be presented.
