JET, the Joint European Torus, is one of the central research facilities of the European fusion research program and the largest and most successful fusion experiment in the world. The tokamak, located on the UKAEA campus in Culham, United Kingdom, has led to many breakthrough results over the past four decades. Most recently, JET gained widespread attention in February 2022 when a record 59 megajoules of sustained fusion energy was announced.

This weekend marked an important milestone: the 40th anniversary of the first JET plasma, which was ignited on June 25, 1983. JET researchers and staff gathered in Culham on Friday to celebrate this anniversary.

This also marks JET's entry into its final phase. After experiments still planned this year, which will be important for the preparations for the operation of ITER, the fusion facility will finally be decommissioned.
