I intend to embark on a large-scale project (third-party funded) concerned with the Dabanniepanjing 大般涅槃經: a lengthy fifth-century Chinese Buddhist text ostensibly of Indian provenance, but very likely a patchwork of literary materials drawn from India, Central Asia and China. The text is a valuable case-study for the production of Buddhist materials between India and China, with an impact upon still further Buddhist cultures (the work was later translated from Chinese to Tibetan), offering insights into the transmission and translation of ideas between South, Central and East Asia in the middle of the first millennium CE.
