Karaiskos, Anton aut <<The>> frequently most contested spot on the globe: Adrianopel I-XXV die Logik eines Raumes als kontinuierlicher Schauplatz militärischer Auseinandersetzungen vorgelegt von Anton Karaiskos The frequently most contested spot on the globe: Adrianopel I-XXV. The logic of a certain space as a continuous scene for military interactions 2012 143 Bl. Ill., graph. Darst. In ?A History of Warfare? the British military historian John Keegan illustrates the town of Edirne (Adrianople), located in the northwestern part of Turkey, as the most contested place in World history. The prestigious historian mentions fifteen battles and sieges that took place within the town and argues for a unique role that geographical circumstances play for this matter. Due to this exceptional background, the aim of this Diploma Thesis is to reflect on his brief assumptions in a critical manner. To begin with, essential methodical and theoretical questions will be treated and underlying problems will be revealed. This does not only relate to general theoretical spatial considerations but also requires a closer look at the phenomenon of battle and its concrete manifestation, the battlefield. Furthermore, with the assistance of this framework, all codified military interactions in the surroundings of Adrianople will be described and classified within a functional context. To conclude, the 25 codified battles and sieges will be evaluated based on the method of historical comparison. The approach takes place invariably on a strategic-operational level regarding topographical conditions as well as socio-economical and political circumstances. In summary, Adrianople constitutes its military importance due to a threshold of conditions: The transit area of Thrace, Adrianople?s significant infrastructural key position on the crossroads of three major rivers and the most important Balkan route as well as Constantinople as Centre of power in south-eastern Europe and the geopolitical importance of the straits of Bosporus and the Dardanelles. This thesis should be a contribution to the ?New Military History?. Zsfassung in dt. und engl.
