Description
Other title:Faunal remains from the settlement near the sanctuary of Artemis et Lousoi (2.-1.c.B.C.)
Summary:eng: During the excavations in the settlement near the temple of Artemis in Lousoi from 1980 - 1991 4832 animal bones dating back to the 2. - 1. centuries B.C. were found. In a project, which was sponsored by the FWF, 3820 pieces were defined, documented and examined with regards to historical as well as geomorphological evidence. The most important animals, concerning economical exploitation, were cattle, followed by sheep's and goats. Less important elements of life-stock were pigs.<br />Breeding of horses, donkeys and mules was performed with regards to the production of working animals, commercial stud-breeding of horses can be assumed. With regards to the surrounding landscape in hellenistic times particular attention should be given to the huge body - size of red deer as well as of domestic cattle. Further suggestions as to the environmental conditions of hellenistic Lousoi can be furnished by interpreting the findings of pelican and bustard.
