Prokop (6th century AD) came from Caesarea in Palestine and received a rhetorical and juridical education. From 527 onwards, he was a secretary and legal adviser on the staff of the emperor's commander Belisar, whom he accompanied to all the battlefields. In his main work ("Wars", Bella), stylistically and linguistically oriented towards the classical models of Greek historiography, he described the wars of Emperor Justinian (527-565) against the Persians, the Vandals in North Africa and the Goths in Italy. As a supplement to this work, he wrote a polemic (invective) under the title Anékdota ("The Unpublished"), in which he painted the image of the emperor and his entourage in the darkest colours, while in a panegyric entitled "Buildings" (De aedificiis) he glorified the same emperor, especially his work as a builder - a paradox that is difficult to interpret.In this introduction, the three works of Prokop are presented in detail and overarching themes, especially the claim to truth, the sources, the credibility and method as well as Prokop's historical thinking, are dealt with according to the current state of research.

Prokop (6. Jahrhundert n. Chr.) stammte aus Caesarea in Palästina und absolvierte eine rhetorische und juristische Ausbildung. Seit 527 gehörte er als Sekretär und Rechtsberater zum Stab des kaiserlichen Feldherrn Belisar, den er auf allen Kriegsschauplätzen begleitete. In seinem stilistisch und sprachlich an den klassischen Vorbildern der griechischen Geschichtsschreibung orientierten Hauptwerk ("Kriege", Bella) beschrieb er die Kriege Kaiser Justinians (527-565) gegen die Perser, die Vandalen in Nordafrika und die Goten in Italien. Als Ergänzung zu diesem Werk verfasste er unter dem Titel Anékdota ("Unveröffentlichtes") eine Schmähschrift (Invektive), in der er das Bild des Kaisers und seines Umfelds in den schwärzesten Farben malte, während er in einer Lobschrift (Panegyrikus) mit dem Titel "Bauten" (De aedificiis) denselben Kaiser, insbesondere dessen Wirken als Bauherr, verherrlichte - ein schwierig zu deutendes Paradoxon.In der vorliegenden Einführung werden die drei Werke Prokops ausführlich vorgestellt und auch übergreifende Themen, vor allem der Wahrheitsanspruch, die Quellen, die Glaubwürdigkeit und Methode sowie das Geschichtsdenken Prokops, auf dem aktuellen Stand der Forschung behandelt.
