Olwig, Karen Fog, author. Global Culture, Island Identity : continuity and change in the Afro-Caribbean community of Nevis / Karen Fog Olwig. Hoboken : Taylor & Francis, 1996. 1 online resource (256 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (Taylor & Francis, viewed May 9, 2023). Looking at the development of cultural identity in the global context, this text uses the approach of historical anthropology. It examines the way in which the West Indian Community of Nevis, has, since the 1600s, incorporated both African and European cultural elements into the framework of social life, to create an Afro-Caribbean culture that was distinctive and yet geographically unbounded - a "global culture". The book takes as its point of departure the processes of cultural interaction and reflectivity. It argues that the study of cultural continuity should be guided by the notion of cultural complexity involving the continuous constitution, development and assertion of culture. It emphasizes the interplay between local and global cultures, and examines the importance of cultural display for peoples who have experienced the process of socioeconomic marginalization in the Western world. Introduction; Part 1 PART I ENGLISH PATRIARCHAL HIERARCHY, AFRICAN BONDAGE; Chapter 1 Chapter One Africans in English Patriachy; Chapter 2 Chapter Two Afro-Caribbean Culture, Euro-Caribbean Institutions; Part 2 PART II IN PURSUIT OF RESPECTABILITY; Chapter 3 CHAPTER THREE The Methodist Society; Chapter 4 CHAPTER FOUR In a Free Society; Chapter 5 CHAPTER FIVE The Struggle for Recognition; Part 3 PART III HOME IS WHERE YOU LEAVE IT: PARADOXES OF IDENTITY; Chapter 6 CHAPTER SIX The Demise of the Local: the background for a global community; Chapter 7 CHAPTER SEVEN The Global Community; Chapter 8 CHAPTER EIGHT Global Culture, Island Identity; Chapter 9 CONCLUSION Toward an Anthropology of Cultural Complexity; References; Index.
