Description
Other title:Transcultural Encounters in the Himalayan Borderlands
Summary:The present study examines Kalimpong and the surrounding border areas of the eastern Himalayas as a paradigmatic case of a "contact zone". In the colonial period as well as in the early post-colonial era, this space enabled a variety of encounters: between (British) India, Tibet and China, but also Nepal and Bhutan; between Christian mission and the religions of the Himalayas; between global flows of money and information and local markets and practices. Using a wealth of local and global historical sources, each contribution traces the paths of actors from different cultural backgrounds and examines the new forms of knowledge and practices that emerged from their encounters and their shifting power relations.
