Over a long period of time Chamisso's intellectual orientation was erratic and roaming: at first he was a romantic-idealist, then he emerged again, somewhat enlightened, in the form of a romantic poet and an empirical natural scientist, who after his success as a writer of prose returned to writing verse: he organized the production of a poetry periodical and then suddenly became a critic of the Vormärz poets.
