The book deals critically with the prevailing understanding of "urbanity" and "city" in science and society. This recurs to a historically defined understanding of the city, which has the metropolis of Western modernity in view and urbanity as a specific, characterized by density, heterogeneity and size urban life. In contrast, this volume presents different forms of city life in different types of cities or urban sizes beyond the metropolises and on different continents. From the perspectives of architecture, urban planning, ethnology, Japanese studies and African studies, different norms, ideals and everyday practices of urban life come to the fore.
