Der1834 begründete Deutsche Zollverein steht im Zentrum der Analyse, denn ohne ihn sind zentrale Phänomene wie die Geschichte der Nationsbildung, des Föderalismus, des Liberalismus oder des Parlamentarismus nicht vollständig zu verstehen. Außerdem stelle der Deutsche Zollverein ein einzigartiges Beispiel für den Verlauf zwischenstaatlicher Integrationsprozesse dar.
