Religion, Klerus und Gesellschaft erlebten im Zeitalter der atlantischen Revolutionen eine Neukonfiguration. In der Unabhängigkeit Lateinamerikas erfuhr wohl keine soziale Gruppierung eine solch unmittelbare und tiefgreifende Umwertung ihrer gesellschaftlichen Stellung wie der katholische Klerus. Der englisch- und spanischsprachige Tagungsband bilanziert die jüngst verstärkt unternommene Erforschung der Rolle des Klerus und der Bedeutung des Religiösen während der Dekolonisation Lateinamerikas, vor allem auch unter Berücksichtigung der längerfristigen Prozesse in der »Sattelzeit der Moderne« (1767-1850). In den Blick genommen werden darüber hinaus die sich verändernden mentalen Einstellungen bzw. der allmähliche Wandel der Religiosität.

Religion, clergy and society experienced profound changes in the Age of the Atlantic Revolutions. No other part of society was more intensely affected by the independence of Latin America than the catholic clergy. The volume, result of an international conference in Gotha/Germany in 2008, presents the findings of recent investigations into the role of clergy, clerical culture and religious mentality in the longue durée of decolonization (1767-1850).
