Description based on print version record.
Functional approaches to the study of language may not only be used to characterize discourse structures, but also to assess their communicative quality. In fact, discourse analysis and evaluation are conceptually related activities. In this volume the link between analysis and evaluation is explored in seven studies discussing a variety of discourse genres like package inserts, telephone openings, survey interviews, meetings, government brochures and direct mail letters. The analytical concepts used stem from different strands of research into language, including cognitive linguistics, pragmalinguistics, conversational analysis and persuasion research.
Includes bibliographical references and index.
Paul van den HOVEN: Introduction -- Arie VERHAGEN: Context, meaning, and interpretation, in a practical approach to linguistics -- Hanneke HOUTKOOP-STEENSTRA: The role of conversation analysis in functional linguistic research -- Tom KOOLE: The role of ethnography in the analysis of institutional discourse -- Leo LENTZ: The history of opening sequences in Dutch telephone conversations -- Henk PANDER MAAT: What authors and readers do with side effects information on drugs -- Hans HOEKEN: Contextual parameters in the evaluation of persuasive texts: A cognitive processing approach -- Peter Jan SCHELLENS, Menno de JONG, Madelon WITTEVEEN: Functional evaluation of public information about laws and regulations.
