This volume begins with essays concerning the major aspects of ancient novels, including discussions on the novels' origins, their audiences, gender relations, and their implications for literary theory. These explorations are followed with detailed studies of Greek and Roman novels (and related works), and their influence on later literature, including that of the Jewish, Christian, Byzantine, and modern periods. Twelve maps illustrate the relevant geography. Schmeling teaches classics at the University of Florida and edits the Petronian Society Newsletter.
