The Sacred and Its Scholars : Comparative Methodologies for the Study of Primary Religious Data / edited by Thomas A. Idinopulos and Edward Yonan. First edition. Leiden, The Netherlands : EJ. Brill, [1996] ©1996 1 online resource. text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource rdacarrier Numen Book Series ; Volume 73 This volume of essays is devoted to a careful examination of the importance of methodology in the study of primary religious data. The essays focus on the \'Sacred\' as an ultimate object of descriptive analysis and critical scrutiny on the part of a select number of North American and European methodologists in the study and teaching of the history of religions and its allied disciplines. The central question to which the contributors respond are these: What is the Sacred? Is it a being or a concept of a being; is it a mental state or an objective reality or something else entirely? Can the Sacred be described as an empirical fact, or as a formal rule for religious inquiry? If the Sacred is a valid category in the study and teaching of religion, then what can be said about the antithesis of the sacred, namely the profane or the secular? This volume probes these questions with great care in order to justify a number of ways the Sacred can be construed as an indispensable notion for the study and teaching of religion. Preliminary Material / Thomas A. Idinopulos and Edward A. Yonan -- Preface / Thomas A. Idinopulos and Edward A. Yonan -- Sacrality as Integrity: “Sacred Order” as a Model for Describing Religious Worlds / William E. Paden -- Zionism, Brahminism and the Embodied Sacred: What the Durkheimians Owe to Sylvain-Lévi / Ivan Strenski -- Rethinking the Sacred: The Notions of ‘Human Body’ and ‘Territory’ in Conceptualizing Religion / Veikko Anttonen -- Giving Voice to the Sacred: Collaborative Representation in the Study of Living Religious Traditions / Lorne L. Dawson -- Encountering the Sacred: Saint Veneration and Visitational Dreams Among Moroccan Jews in Israel / Yoram Bilu -- The Numinous as a Category of Values / Dan Merkur -- The Sacred: A Sceptical View / Stewart Guthrie -- Understanding and Teaching Rudolph Otto’s The Idea of the Holy / Thomas A. Idinopulos -- The Domicile in the Study and Teaching of the Sacred, Using the Methodological Assumptions of Jonathan Z. Smith and Mircea Eliade / David Cave -- Theology and the Pedagogy of the Sacred / Charles E. Winquist -- Respect of Others’ Sacreds / George Weckman -- Select Bibliography / Thomas A. Idinopulos and Edward A. Yonan -- Index of Names / Thomas A. Idinopulos and Edward A. Yonan -- Index of Subjects / Thomas A. Idinopulos and Edward A. Yonan. Description based on print version record.
