Research in this Special Issue includes welfare assessment related to pilot whales, finishing pigs, commercial turkey flocks, and dairy goats; the use of sensors or wearable technologies, such as heart rate monitors to assess sleep in dairy cows, ear tag sensors, and machine learning to assess commercial pig behaviour; non-invasive measures, such as video monitoring of behaviour, computer vision to analyse video footage of red foxes, remote camera traps of free-roaming wild horses, infrared thermography of effort and sport recovery in sport horses; telomere length and regulatory genes as novel biomarkers of stress in broiler chickens; the effect of environment on growth physiology and behaviour of laboratory rare minnows and housing system on anxiety, stress, fear, and immune function of laying hens; and discussions of natural behaviour in farm animal welfare and maintaining health, welfare, and productivity of commercial pig herds. About the Editors -- Preface to "Animal Welfare Assessment: Novel Approaches and Technologies" -- Evaluating Potential Cetacean Welfare Indicators from Video of Live Stranded Long-Finned Pilot Whales (Globicephala melas edwardii) -- Health and Welfare Survey of 30 Dairy Goat Farms in the Midwestern United States -- Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability Change with Sleep Stage in Dairy Cows -- Effects of Housing System on Anxiety, Chronic Stress, Fear, and Immune Function in Bovan Brown Laying Hens -- The "Real Welfare" Scheme: Changes in UK Finishing Pig Welfare since the Introduction of Formal Welfare Outcome Assessment -- The Effect of Environmental Enrichment on Laboratory Rare Minnows (Gobiocypris rarus): Growth, Physiology, and Behavior -- Computer Vision for Detection of Body Posture and Behavior of Red Foxes -- Evaluation of Welfare in Commercial Turkey Flocks of Both Sexes Using the Transect Walk Method -- Recumbency as an Equine Welfare Indicator in Geriatric Horses and Horses with Chronic Orthopaedic Disease -- Telomere Length and Regulatory Genes as Novel Stress Biomarkers and Their Diversities in Broiler Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) Subjected to Corticosterone Feeding -- Behavioral Monitoring Tool for Pig Farmers: Ear Tag Sensors, Machine Intelligence, and Technology Adoption Roadmap -- Use of Remote Camera Traps to Evaluate Animal-Based Welfare Indicators in Individual Free-Roaming Wild Horses -- Welfare Health and Productivity in Commercial Pig Herds -- Genetic Parameters of Effort and Recovery in Sport Horses Assessed with Infrared Thermography -- Farm Animals Are Long Away from Natural Behavior: Open Questions and Operative Consequences on Animal Welfare.
