Since its publication nearly half a century ago, this major work based on Marc Augé’s state thesis has had a considerable impact on French anthropology. Comparing the symbolic systems (social institutions, representations of the world and the individual, beliefs and rites) of three ethnic groups in the southern part of the Ivory Coast, Marc Augé proposes the concept of “ideo-logic”: a form of grammar which cannot be reduced to any material causality, but through which each of the ethnic groups formulates the possible and the thinkable. In an even more innovative way, he shows how beliefs in witchcraft are deployed within this “ideo-logic” as a true theory of power, which is to say as an “effective possibility of action on people and on things”. He notably illustrates this theory of power by studying an institution located in Bregbo, on the edge of the Ébrié lagoon, led by the prophet… French Sociology & Anthropology power belief rite witchcraft pouvoir croyance sorcellerie 2274-164X Dozon, Jean-Pierre |
