520 |a In contrast to the research that has hitherto been mainly interested in military facts, Nikolaus Braun pursues a primarily legitimizing conflict, a political war of faith in which the symbolic level was just as decisive as military realities. The investigation goes far beyond a conventional story of propaganda and press: not only flags, songs, postage stamps, uniforms, etc. became carriers of national propaganda, but also funerals, hunger strikes, executions, but also the entire foreign policy and large parts of the warfare downright staged. Braun traces how the possibilities of thinking and acting mutually stimulate, condition and block each other, thus making the inner logic of an apparently irrational conflict visible.
