The term seeks to capture the gain in meaning and the diversification of the media in the present and thus not least to distinguish today's from earlier societies. However, it would be wrong to assume that the media did not also have a central and specific role in earlier societies. The 19th century was not only characterized by the rise of a large number of once new media, but also by the fact that society was first constituted and differentiated through public and media communication. The volume makes it its task to present interlocking central media and social developments for Germany and France in an overarching and comparative perspective.
