Jewish customs and traditions about death, burial and mourning are numerous, diverse and intriguing. They are considered by many to have a respectable pedigree that goes back to the earliest rabbinic period. In order to examine the accurate historical origins of many of them, an international conference was held at Tel Aviv University in 2010 and experts dealt with many aspects of the topic. This volume includes most of the papers given then, as well as a few added later. What emerges are a wealth of fresh material and perspectives, as well as the realization that the high Middle Ages saw a set of exceptional innovations, some of which later became central to traditional Judaism while others were gradually abandoned. Were these innovations influenced by Christian practice? Which prayers and poems reflect these innovations? What do the sources tell us about changing attitudes to death and life-after death? Are tombstones an important guide to historical developments? Answers to these questions are to be found in this unusual, illuminating and readable collection of essays that have been well documented, carefully edited and well indexed.

Answers to these questions are to be found in this unusual, illuminating and readable collection of essays that have been well documented, carefully edited and well indexed.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="540" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">This eBook is made available Open Access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license:</subfield><subfield code="u">https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0</subfield><subfield code="u">https://www.degruyter.com/dg/page/open-access-policy</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="500" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Includes indexes.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Description based on print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="506" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="f">Unrestricted online access</subfield><subfield code="2">star</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="530" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Issued also in print.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jewish mourning customs</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Death</subfield><subfield code="x">Religious aspects</subfield><subfield code="x">Judaism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jews</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe, Western</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">70-1789.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Judaism</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">Medieval and early modern period, 425-1789.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Folklore.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Judaism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Liturgy.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Reif, Stefan C.,</subfield><subfield code="d">1944-</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Lehnardt, Andreas,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Bar-Levav, Avriel,</subfield><subfield code="e">editor.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="z">3-11-055216-7</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="z">3-11-033861-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="760" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="t">Studia Judaica</subfield><subfield code="w">(CKB)3390000000063162</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Studia Judaica (Walter de Gruyter & Co.) ;</subfield><subfield code="v">Band 78.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Rethinking diaspora ;</subfield><subfield code="v">Volume 1.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="906" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">BOOK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="ADM" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="b">2024-07-17 08:54:03 Europe/Vienna</subfield><subfield code="f">system</subfield><subfield code="c">marc21</subfield><subfield code="a">2014-09-07 02:13:59 Europe/Vienna</subfield><subfield code="g">false</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="AVE" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">DOAB Directory of Open Access Books</subfield><subfield code="P">DOAB Directory of Open Access Books</subfield><subfield code="x">https://eu02.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/view/uresolver/43ACC_OEAW/openurl?u.ignore_date_coverage=true&portfolio_pid=5338585610004498&Force_direct=true</subfield><subfield code="Z">5338585610004498</subfield><subfield code="b">Available</subfield><subfield code="8">5338585610004498</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="AVE" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">DOAB Directory of Open Access Books</subfield><subfield code="P">DOAB Directory of Open Access Books</subfield><subfield code="x">https://eu02.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/view/uresolver/43ACC_OEAW/openurl?u.ignore_date_coverage=true&portfolio_pid=5339653820004498&Force_direct=true</subfield><subfield code="Z">5339653820004498</subfield><subfield code="b">Available</subfield><subfield code="8">5339653820004498</subfield></datafield></record></collection>
