Summary: | It is above all as a historian, concerned about the concrete facts of the evolution of Chinese society, that I intend to approach the history of ideas, conceptions and intellectual trends in China. The time is no longer when we pictured the history of China as a long, uniform series of practically interchangeable periods. The history of China has a meaning, just like ours. It has been marked by ruptures and has known periods of very rapid evolution. Who admits that men are products of their society and their history, the XVI th , XVII th and XVIII th Chinese centuries constitute a privileged period of research. The upheavals and social, economic and political transformations that have taken place during these three centuries, the richness and diversity of intellectual life, the evolution of ideas, the large number of independent minds and remarkable personalities make them the exceptional interest. |
