eng: The author of this paper was active for many decades as the executive director and owner of a music instrument manufacturing firm. For almost the same length of time, he was also a member of the management committee of the instrument makers' association, which set the standards for the industry. He had witnessed the commercial developments in the music sector during the historically important post-World War II era. Economic changes have demanded constantly changes policies on the part of the Association and the author of this paper has been involved with these developments over many years. The following paper does not merely confine itself to a report of the events, but in addition it attempts to define the changes in the tasks facing the industry and the activities of the various professional organizations during the last two centuries. After describing and analyzing the developments in the sector up to World War II, the main emphasis of this dissertation becomes a study of the situation since 1945. Particular attention is given to the activities and problems of the German Federal Association of Music Instrument Makers, of which the author was chairman.
