The outcome of our investigation is, that Haydn found his own, very personal and characteristic way, one that proves to be widely independent from Mozart. Before finding this characteristic style, Haydn went through a period full of systematic endeavours, during which he tried to overcome the forms of Missae breves and the Cantata Masses he had been cultivating in his youth. This period resulted in a number of second versions. Our analysis took into account not only all aspects of the history of musical art, but also details of importance in the matters of music, theology and ecclesiastical policy. One chapter is dedicated to a precise description of Haydn's works, and to the development he took in these years with regard to the techniques of his compositions. The study tries to achieve this particularly by analyzing a selected number of interesting parts of early Salzburg masses. Haydn's way to maturity, which we want to show forth, found its culmination point, when he finished his 'Missa Sancti Amandi' (1776). Preparations for the first printed edition of this work, based on the 'Vienna Autograph', have been completed in the course of this underlying research work.
